Answers
Q. When are we going to have a new priest at St. Paul's?
A. There's no deadline that has to be met to call a new priest to St. Paul's. The average time for searching for a priest is between 12 and 18 months. Because we have a priest-in-charge and an active and responsive vestry, the needs of St. Paul's are being well taken care of during this transition, which affords us the luxury of not rushing the search process.
Instead of working toward a specific date to complete the search process, the search committee has a list of tasks that must be completed in the search process. At this time, the search committee has been formed and it has conducted a comprehensive study of the parish and produced a profile that will mailed to potential rector candidates. The search committee also has created a job description which has been submitted to the national Episcopal church's listing of open clergy positions and the position will be advertised in appropriate publications as well.
Q. What is the process for searching for a new priest?
A. The search for a new priest involves several tasks, which is completed in the following order:
- Form a search committee.
- Create a parish profile. This task involves assessing all the aspects of the parish, creating a job description for the new priest, and preparing a printed document with information about the parish to send to candidates for the position.
- Gather names of candidates. Advertise for candidates and contact the national church to gather names of potential candidates from the national database.
- Screen candidates and conduct interviews. During this process, the candidates will be screened and those found suitable will be interviewed by phone by the search committee. After the phone interviews, the search committee will narrow the list of candidates and then visit those candidates in their home parishes. After the visits to the home parishes, the search committee will shorten the list again and will give the vestry a list of names of candidates.
- Vestry selects candidates to visit St. Paul's. The vestry will then invite candidates to visit St. Paul's and conduct further interviews.
- Vestry selects a new priest for St. Paul's.
Q. Who is on the search committee?
A. The search committee is made up of 12 people from the parish -- Ed Arning, Don Clayton, Dan Felciano, Stan Golden, Alicia Hollis, Newton Molloy, Sally Palmer, Marcie Richmond, Peggy Seneker, Wendi Watts, Don Whitfield, and Jo Wintker.
